Recently, the court heard about parental alienation from the affected child. The mother was saying negative things about the father to the child in order to disrupt the father:child relationship. The child said that “it did not hurt that much cause I know she’s just saying it. Up to me what I say to you. My visit not hers. Shouldn’t have to say stuff I don’t want to. Shouldn’t have to say I hate dad because that’s not true.”

This child may sustain psychological damage having to manage the stress of having to agree with the mother. The child may then feel they are to blame for the father’s elimination from their lives, which is damaging to their self-esteem and may cause psychological ill-health in the form of anxiety and depression. It may deleteriously affect their formation of adult relationships throughout the remainder of their lives.
