Question: “I am getting psych treatment and otherwise working on myself for mental health issues that have bneen caused in part by the stress of the family court process. I’m trying to find a good job, too. If I can’t find a decent job before my parenting trial, what would the family court think about me being on NDIS?”

Answer: “If you are doing everything you can to establish and maintain your parenting capacity, that is a good thing. Getting help for mental illness, including getting an NDIS package does not necessarily mean you cannot be a safe parent. Look at it this way: if you have a mental illness and get no help, your health may decline, along with your capacity to parent safely and effectively. We all know mental illness is stigmatised, but if you present your situation as doing your best to be a good and safe parent, that’s a whole lot better than pretending nothing is wrong (when it is).”
